Today after a sleep in we visited Piazza Armerina, an ancient Roman Villa that was covered up by a landslide back in 1161, and prior to that was partly ruined by an earthquake 346 AD, so it's pretty old and has a little history.
It was made up of 62 rooms covering 4100 square meters, with 120 million small mosaic tesserae covering the floors. It is estimated that 1 square meter takes 6 days to complete for 1 artisan which equates to 21000 working hours.
The mosaics are unreal, here is a picture of the famous bikini girls which are actually girls competing in sports events. This room I estimate to be about 8 x 8m square, so lots of tiles hey.
The place is chock full of tourists but it's well worth the hustle and bustle.
We then went and looked at more old stuff, churches and the like. Went up lots of steps again and then found a nice little restaurant for some more lovely pasta.
We are seeing that many incredible things I'm losing trek. We don't always have wi fi where we are staying so it's easy to loose trek of where we have been and even what day it is.
The weather is warm just like spring back home, getting up to 24 some days and the sun seems to have a fair bit of bite in it. Were off to Agrigento next and leaving Vizzini to look at some more old stuff, really really old stuff apperantly. Our last night in Vizzini and our hosts had us for dinner, guess what, more fantastic food. Thanks Anna, Maria and Giovannni for having us it has been an unforgettable experience. Here are some shots of things you see around Vizzini.
Our host Giovannis shop.
Our front garden, prickly pear, I've even seen it growing in the roof guttering, it's everywhere man!
You can drive at the age of 14, but you can only go 40kph, and do you reckon it's policed, huh
